Main fields of research

There are two main fields of research in the Department:

  1. developing new and adaptation known mathematical, statistical and computer science methods, their adoption and applications in experimental design, designing non-experimental empirical studies (surveys) within agricultural and biological sciences as well as in data analysis, inference and interpretation of results,
  2. using mathematical, statistical and bioinformatic approaches, methods and procedures to computer simulation of real biological phenomena and processes, especially at molecular level.

Abstracts of major scientific subjects

Mądry W., Kowalska B., Rajfura A., Gozdowski D., Kozak M., Sieczko L., Paderewski J., Iwańska M., Studnicki M. :Developing new and adaptation known mathematical, statistical and computer science methods, their adoption and applications in experimental design, designing non-experimental empirical studies (surveys) within agricultural and biological sciences as well as in data analysis, inference and interpretation of results

Methodological and statistical studies on cause-effect relations within traits of crops and environment were conducted using path analysis, sequential yield component analysis (SYCA) and two-dimensional partition of yield variability. The researches were done by M. Kozak, Ph. D, D. Sc., for his the “Dr Habil” degree “Analysis of cause-effect relationships in agronomy” within the domain of agricultural sciences, and within the discipline of agronomy. These thesis were accepted by the Faculty with very good estimate.

Genotype-by-environment interaction was studied in terms of yield stability and adaptation patterns of cultivars and advanced lines. Combined approach consisting of AMMI analysis based on fixed AMMI model and cluster analysis was adopted and used for balanced data in two-way classification and unbalanced data in three-way classification for grain yield obtained in multi-environment winter wheat variety trials (METs). Various yield stability and adaptation patterns of advanced wheat lines and check varieties, including old, medium and modern ones, were found. Locations were grouped into homogenous clusters (constituting so called mega-environments) according to pattern of yield discriminating among studied genotypes. These researches have been completed as PhD dissertation of J. Paderewski, Ph. D, entitled “Usefulness of AMMI model to evaluate yield response of winter wheat to variable environments”. These thesis were accepted by the Faculty with very good estimate.

Diversity of less-favoured areas with respect to agriculture potential, infrastructure and social-economic conditions in Podlaskie province was studied using multivariate methods like principal component analysis and cluster analysis.

Achievement of the Department is the very fruitful research cooperation between our Department and Section of Pomological Plants Breeding at the Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in a range of statistical methodology of genetic and breeding experiments and field trials as well as cooperation between our Department and Crop Breeding Company “Nasiona Kobierzyc” including analysis of yield and yield-related traits data from multi-environment trials with winter wheat using joint AMMI and cluster analysis. We also continued the international cooperation involving joint research on improving statistical methods which are useful to advanced evaluation (from biological and practical points of view) of dependencies between crop yield and different yield-contributing traits and also to effective analysis of data from multi-environment crop cultivar trials.

Pawłowski K., Dudkiewicz M., Nowicka A. : Using mathematical, statistical and bioinformatics approaches, methods and procedures to computer simulation of real biological phenomena and processes, especially at molecular level

The effect of oligosaccharide phosphorylation on ligand-beta amylase complex stability in /Solanum tuberosum /was studied. Homology modeling was performed for water-phosphoglucan dikinase using amino-acid sequence obtained by PCR sequencing. The correlation between molecular properties of the TCR/pMHC complexes and human T lymphocyte alloreactivity has been analysed in the context of applications in transplantology. Interaction energies between HLA antigen and TCR receptor have been calculated for various HLA alleles. Bioinformatic analysis has been performed for plant metacaspases and an attempt has been made to construct a model of the /Triticum aestivum/ metacaspase structural model. In 2008, K. Pawłowski, Ph. D, D. Sc., has concluded his habilitation thesis "Discovery of novel protein structural domains. Predicting and validating function, biomedical applications", and obtained the “Dr Habil” degree within the domain of biological sciences, and within the discipline of biology. The habilitation procedure has been conducted in the Nencki Institute for Experimental Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences. The project "Modelling the alloreactivity of human T lymphocyte receptors – studying TCR/pMHC complexes in the context of HLA antigen variability, aimed at applications in transplantology” funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education has been successfully completed. Structures and functions and evolutionary history of CLCA, a novel enzyme family, have been studied. Studies on localization and identification of QTA alleles in apple trees have been concluded. These studies were part of an European project /"High-quality Disease Resistant Apples for a Sustainable Agriculture (HiDRAS)"/ (Contract N° QLK5-CT-2002-01492).

Statistical analyses have been performed on experimental data on beta-amyloid fibrille lengths and their dependence on fibrilisation time and conditions. Also, relation between beta-amyloid fibrille length and subject age and gender has been studied. Dr A. Nowicka took part in the project "Biomolecule dynamics in coarse-grain models" -- N N202 0852 33.

In 2008 two grant applications were submitted to the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, among them "Mechanisms of beta-amyloid formation in the presence of metal ions".
