Abstracts of major scientific subject

Radecki A., Lenart S., Niemczyk H., Suwara I.: Natural and economic effects of the new technologies of plant and soil cultivation

Studies concerning the effects of two main parameters of plant growing technology: soil cultivation techniques with differentiated ploughing depth and different long term rotations have been continued. In cultivation technology no-tillage system with use a special disk drill for direct sowing is studied. Our research is based on three long term permanent experiments.

At present changes of soil properties are observed. The researches should be continued and it is necessary to collect results and present conclusions for the estimation of efficiency of various new technologies of plant and soil cultivation. The obtainted results well be prepared as scientific publications. Studies concerning effects of tramlines.

Rozbicki J., Wyszyński Z., Artyszak A., Kucińska K., Samborski S.: Yield quality versus environmental and agronomical factors

The research on experimental fields and farm fields on winter and spring wheat, rye, winter triticale, oat, potato, sugar beet and bean grown for dry seeds has been carried out in Mazovia, Łódź, Podlasie and south Lublin province.

The aim of the investigation is to estimate the site and agronomical factors influence on yield and its quality. The fulfillment of quality standards by plant raw materials coming from farm fields in terms of food safety and usage of plant raw materials for food processing and non-food purposes was estimated.

The investigation on farm fields also includes the analysis of the correctness of cultivation technology in protected areas.

Stypiński P., Borawska-Jarmułowicz B., Mastalerczuk G., Sienkiewicz-Paderewska D.: Formation of meadow and pasture swards by agronomic and environmental factors

In long term field trials on the black-earth soil in Jaktorów the effect of 14 different fertilizer’s combinations on yields, and botanical composition of meadows sward has been estimated. The changes in chemical content of soil water solution during the years have been the most interesting part of this study. Meadows and pastures studies were carried out on also on the area of Landscape Park “Podlaski Przełom Bugu “ and in private farms in different regions of Poland. The changes in botanical composition of meadows sward have been mainly investigated Those studies indicated the crisis in pasture management. Lack of utilization and plant succession seems to be the main reason of pasture degradation .Nature 2000 and agro-environmental programmes should help in grassland protection but in practice the results are not satisfying because farmers are still not very interested in environmental protection of their grasslands.

Radecki A., Ciesielska A., Łęgowiak Z., Piskorz B., Wysmułek A., Sławiński P., Rezmerska-Piętka J.: Research on connection between weed species and cultivated plants and possibilities of limitation of weeds population

At the Experimental Fields at Chylice, Obory and Skierniewice and in the area of private farms situated in central Poland studies on weed infestation of the arable land are realized. The aim of the research is to gather of wide material and estimate of the relationships between floristic composition of weeds and using cultivation technology and weather conditions.

The obtained results are being prepared as engineer’s and MSc theses.

Artyszak A., Nowicki B., Kucińska K.: Methods of agricultural techniques of the root reduction of sugar beet root

Project no 2 PO6R 090 28

The field experiment was located at the university experimental station in Żelazna. The aim of the project is the investigation on reduction of sugar beet root diseases by methods of agricultural techniques (traditional cultivation of stubble, straw fertilization, and charlock growing as stubble intercrop, subsoiler) in rotation where sugar beet is growing in 66%. Two agricultural varieties Henrike and Esperanza were used. Additionally it was possible to compare the reaction of these both varieties in case of sugar beet cultivation year by year as well.

During the investigation period (three years) the root infection by diseases was not intensive. But infected roots were mostly in case of cultivation after sugar beet than after spring wheat. The highest participation of infected roots in case of traditional cultivation and the smallest one in case of applying straw and charlock. There was no differences between varieties.

Yield of technological sugar was higher in case of cultivation beet after wheat than after beet. The highest technological sugar yield was achieved after applying charlock as stubble intercrop and the lowest after using subsoiler. Differences between two applied varieties were not significant.

Zdzisław Wyszyński, Beata Michalska: Spatial organization and yielding of sugar beet canopy as affected by environmental and agronomic factors

Project no N310 015 31/1235

Technological sugar yield per unit area depended on total biomass yield, the share of root dry mass in total one and sugar content in roots. Root yield and processing quality were formed in sugar beet canopy during process of growth and development in the first year of vegetation. In particular phases of growth and development of crop, i.e. while forming the population, changed not only canopy organization but also the course of main living processes. The mechanisms affecting both population and there occurring changes were of importance for the forming of yield component: plant density and average mass of root significantly determining the size and root yield quality. Both in domestic and foreign literature there is very few publications dealing with investigation of canopy features and plants within it and relationships between canopy features and yielding. Also, there is lack complex data that analyze reactions and features of individual plant in population as affected by site-agronomic (agrotechnical) factors. These items are the object of the proposed project.

Contemporary mechanized technologies of sugar beet production causes the canopy of this crop is composed of the rows of plants not only growing in irregular distance each from the other, but also of various size. It can result from no precisely made soil management, seeder quality and its functioning, as well as seed quality and differentiated rate of plant emergence. Thus, there was big variability of plant number in canopy and individual root mass. The share of small roots I yield structure decreased average root mass and technological value, thus being the cause of low level of sugar beet yielding.

The aim of any cultivation should be to reach leveled canopy, and plants of targeted morphological and qualitative features in it. Obtaining individual roots of even and big mass enabled to increase the yielding level. The task of the right agronomic way should be an analysis of the range and scale of changes of plant in sugar beet canopy under the environment and man applied factors and trying to properly use variability of individuals forming the canopy. Apart from investigating relationships occurring during growth and development that determined sugar beet yielding, a practical use of obtained data will be appropriate agrotechnical (agronomic) recommendations for sugar beet producers.

Zdzisław Wyszyński: Productivity of miscanthus (Miscantus x giganteus) grown for energy purposes under changing conditions of water and mineral nutrients supply and the role of the species in the use of the slurry

Project no 1234/P01/2006/31

Strategy of renewable energy development assumes an increase of the share of energy of renewable sources in the fuel-energy balance of the country up to 7,5% in 2010 and 14% in 2020. There is still too low share of renewable energy in global energy balance. Among these sources of big importance is crop biomass for energy purposes. Following an exhaustion of generally available residual biomass resources one can expect an intensive increase in energy crop cultivation. Among potential energy crops miscanthus, representing C4 photosynthetic mechanism seems to be the one of best adapted species to our environmental conditions, simultaneously guaranteeing forming big amount of biomass of a calorific value approaching that of wood and coal brown.

The aim of the undertaken research is:

  • recognition of growth mechanism of miscanthus during a whole vegetation period depending on irrigation and fertilization with a slurry or mineral nitrogen, thus determining conditions necessary for its optimal growth and reaching a maximum dry mass yield,
  • comparison of the effects of the mentioned above fertilization with data got with a traditional nitrogen fertilization and other mineral nutrients,
  • evaluation of nutrient needs to Ca, N, P and K,
  • indication of optimal ecologically and economically kind of fertilization
  • evaluation of miscanthus use in phytoremediation of heavy metals from the soil,
  • determination of the effect of the analyzed factors on miscanthus burning value.
  • determination of PAR efficiency use in dry mass production of miscanthus,
  • obtaining data for better evaluation of the variability range of attainable absorption, retention and reduction CO2 to the atmosphere under production cultivation of the species.
