The Autonomous Department of Microbial Biology was established in January 2008 to fulfill the needs of SGGW concerning the introduction of modern research and the teaching program in the field of microbiology. Faculty members of the Department were recruited from the two Departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and Biology SGGW (the Department of Biochemistry and the former Department of Agricultural Microbiology), from the Department of Microbial Biochemistry of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, PAS, and from the Department of Microbiology of the Warsaw University. 

The Autonomous Department of Microbial Biology is located at the first and fourth floor of building no. 37 at the SGGW campus (ul. Nowoursynowska 159). Two modern laboratory rooms for students and five research laboratories serve for both teaching and work purposes.
